Urban Exploration Photography Tips

Urban exploration photography has quickly become a popular pastime among photographers eager to uncover some macabre photos. But it comes with its share of risks; many haunted locations may be run-down and potentially unsafe, so here are a few guidelines on staying safe while taking compelling images.

Before venturing to an abandoned building or site, conduct extensive research. This could involve reading other people’s accounts of their experiences at the location as well as unearthing historical details and maps pertaining to its past; being knowledgeable of its history will allow you to capture its unique spirit and mystery more effectively – for instance if the site once housed an asylum you could use that fact as inspiration to create images with haunted elements.

Always remain aware of the legalities involved with trespassing. Even though a building may appear abandoned, it could still belong to someone – it is best to obtain permission prior to shooting in any abandoned structure, and show proper respect when shooting there – no breaking anything or causing further damage; you never know who may live there!

Make the most of every opportunity and let creativity lead the way! Experiment with various angles, for instance observing from above instead of below, looking up instead of down at a room, etc. Sometimes the most striking images emerge from small details–a crack in a wall, rust on a door, or the shadow cast by a grated floor–and black and white may even add drama or emphasize specific textures or shadows in an image.
